Stage 5: ZWETTL – BAD LEONFELDEN
Route: 9.2 km, 200 m elevation gain
The path takes us from the parish church towards Oberneukirchen, past the town hall. We cross the Distlbach stream and then turn right. If you have time, you can visit the Bee Museum.
Behind the museum, we follow the Bee Experience Trail to the right. At a sawmill, we join a hiking trail. After about 300 metres, we come to the Ambrosius Chapel, in the shade of a large lime tree that is a protected natural monument.
We continue through the Distl Valley, passing information boards about the life of bees and a beekeeper’s hut with a display hive. We now leave the Bee Experience Trail, keep to the right on the path and walk uphill until we come to a crossroads. Here we turn left and find ourselves on the so-called ‘old school path’, which leads us across meadows and through woods to the village of Schönau.
At a former inn, we turn right and follow a path that is sometimes difficult to make out until we reach a tarmac road in the village of Langzwettl.
Here we turn left and shortly afterwards reach the village of Dietrichschlag.
We stay on the road and, after about 2.0 kilometres, reach the end of the village and walk straight ahead over a bridge.
Here we turn left and shortly afterwards come onto the Wilheringer Weg, which we follow until just before Bad Leonfelden. We turn right onto the newly designed circular trail with informative panels. At Bründlstraße, we turn left and soon reach the church of Maria Schutz am Bründl.
